Bilstein Strut Bilstein, Getting the ride that is right for you
Bilstein mono-tube gas pressure shock absorbers are available in a wide variety of sizes and stiffness settings, depending upon the vehicle type and use. All Bilstein shock absorbers instantaneously self-adjust to changing road surfaces; in addition, their performance does not gradually decline from age, use or heat, requiring no compensating manual adjustments as with conventional multi-tube shocks. Shock stiffness settings are divided into the categories shown below

Heavy Duty (HD) - For most vehicles including full-size sedans, SUV's and trucks. These shocks provide improved handling and stability without sacrificing ride comfort. They offer super damping ability that makes them ideal for heavy hauling for occasional off-road use, while maintaining an exceptional "street" ride.

Comfort (C) - For the driver who wants maximum ride comfort, with the virtual elimination of "bottoming out" and vehicle sway. These shocks generally maintain and, in many cases, enhance a vehicle's original ride qualities while increasing road-handling and overall stability.

Koni

Koni Shock Koni Shocks
Many of the KONI Sport dampers are externally adjustable by means of a knob, so they need not be disassembled from the car. The fine-tuning of the damping forces to personal driving style and to different driving conditions is therefore not more than a matter of seconds
Special / Classic - Most are Rebound Adjustable off the vehicle.
Rebound is adjusted by fully compressing the shock and rotating it CW to make it Firmer.

Sport - Externally Rebound Adjustable.
These dampers can be adjusted, literally at the turn of a knob, a technique borrowed from Fromula-1 racing where Koni dampers have dominated the field for years. One can switch back and forth, in most cases in a matter of seconds, from a comfortable "touring" setting to a more firm setting for a sporty drive. By means of a knob the damping forces can be altered to driving conditions or personal preferences.

Race - Externally Rebound Adjustable
Shortened body length for increased travel with coil-over springs.
Movable body circlips for different ride heights for certain cars
No warranty
Designed to work with coilover sleeves
Valved for higher spring rates

Warning: Koni Series SPA1 shock absorbers are specifically for use in off highway drag race competition only. If used on public highways loss of vehicle control and consequent personal injuries my result. Drag Race - The Koni SPA1 Series shock absorber (for drag racing only) is a complete departure from the old "90/10" thinking which is no longer effective in modern drag race competition.

The old thinking was to allow the vehicle front end to rise quickly and stay there to promote as much weight transfer as possible to the rear wheels. This was achieved by virtually no rebound forces ("10") and a great deal of bump forces ("90"). This massive amount of bump force was supposed to hold the front suspension up to maintain that "bite".

Unfortunately the nose-in-the-air position trapped huge volumes of air which ruined any attempt at aerodynamics so ET's were not as good as they could have been.

Koni SPA1 Series shocks deal with this in several ways. First, they use virtually no bump (compression) damping. Why? To allow the front-end to settle quicker, restoring the nose down attitude that is so essential for cleaner air flow. Second, the rebound (extension) forces are velocity sensitive; that is, they increase at a rate directly proportionate to piston speed.

So, what does this mean? - On a dry surface with good hookup, the amount of lift generated by initial launch is, of course, very sudden and quite violent. The velocity sensitive nature of the SPA1 reacts instantly (no magic, just good design and tuning) to damp this lift to avoid bogging caused by too much weight transfer. (Yes, you can have too much of a good thing).

On the other end of the spectrum, a slick surface would naturally provide less lift and tire shock, so the SPA1 then allows more movement of the front end because the lack of traction initially does no lift the chassis as violently. This "gentle" impulse does not activate the higher speed circuit of the SPA1, so you end up with more front to rear weight transfer and accordingly better bite. Not only that, they have five settings that enable you to tune your chassis. For Koni rear SPA1 shocks, there is a big difference. They still have nearly zero bump (compression) damping but the rebound damping, unlike the front is digressive.

Digressive? - Yes. This means they are designed to digress, or "blow off" at high piston speed. Why? Well, if you had the velocity sensitive type setting the front shocks use, it would be possible to grossly over damp the rear suspension on initial launch, thereby picking up rear wheels. The rear SPA1 Koni will "blow off" then, and allow proper "unwinding " of the rear suspension.

Tokico

Tokico HP Series Shock
Tokico HP Series - the famous "Blue Shock" - continues to be the overwhelming choice of performance enthusiasts looking for the best in overall handling and ride quality. The HP Series damping typifies TOKICO's valving flexibility and philosophy by minimizing low speed damping force and greatly increasing damping at medium and high piston speeds for improved compliance, tire adhesion and handling.
Tokico Illumina Illumina Series - Adjustable Shocks - For the serious enthusiast, TOKICO offers five-position adjustable Illumina Series shocks and struts. Its sophisticated adjustment system was designed for tuning street suspensions, so you have the ability to set up your car’s handling for a variety of driving environments.

Using a screwdriver, a simple click indicates your change to ride or handling balance. So whether you’re going to the track, or simply cruising, the Illumina’s adjustment range adapts to your needs.

Illumina even works on the race track. Steeda, a nationally known Mustang tuner, uses Illumina struts and shocks on their road race and drag race cars. The Illumina units not only perform well, but Steeda is pleased with their durability.

Internally, Illumina uses TOKICO’s sophisticated multi-stage, variable-aperture piston and valve system combined with a five-position bypass shutter-valve.

This valve system allows simultaneous rebound and compression damping adjustment.

A shutter-valve detent permits making easy adjustments, so that you can make quick changes and still know which setting you’ve chosen.
